San Lorenzo, an ancient Mesoamerican city and archaeological site, has been discovered in Veracruz state, east-central Mexico, approximately 38 miles (60 km) from the Gulf of Mexico. This site is believed to be the oldest known center of Olmec civilization, dating back to around 1200 BC.
